Private Kendo Shiai (7dan vs 7dan)

The dojo that I practice at has an annual shiai (competition) where all the local doctors get together and compete. This year there was three big teams. I was unable to stay until the very end of the competition so I don't know which team won. A few of my senseis and friends were competing so I went to cheer them on. Red is one of my senseis. He is very good at jodan, but he didn't use it in this shiai. I am not sure why.

Staff vs. Sword - Guard Breaker?

The quarterstaff is often underestimated but it packs a serious wallop. Can a swordsman even block it? We tested it to find out. Sword and Shield sparring Nick vs Mike

Sparring using shields as were commonly used by the Vikings and Saxons and many other nations in Europe and beyond. There is not a single known surviving treatise detailing how these punch grip shields were used. However we are sparring with them with the knowledge of renaissance shield and buckler combat. Therefore this isn't claiming to be a certain style, as we will likely never know what sword and shield styles looked like from the era of these weapons. But we can experiment and have a bit of fun with applying knowledge of later styles. Nick is using the larger red and cream shield. Mike, the smaller yellow and navy/grey one.

Impressive fighting skills at work. There is a reason why these guys teach swordsmanship, they are amazing.

This match took place at the Blood & Iron historical martial arts school in New Westminster, BC, Canada. Richard Marsden, co-founder and principal instructor of the Phoenix Society of Historical Swordsmanship, came for a visit to give two seminars, one on Fiore's longsword and another on Polish saber fencing. After the instruction he sparred with Lee Smith, co-founder and principal instructor of Blood & Iron.
